When you role play on Twitter it is easy to lose sight of the fact that RP opportunities exist on many different platforms and even in real life or at least live, face to face interactions. One of the most popular platforms is Sony’s PlayStation®3 (PS3) which recently announced that total cumulative sales had reached 50 million units worldwide and continues to gain momentum.
The PS3 system has delivered high-definition and high quality entertainment experiences since it was launched in November 2006. Unlike other systems, the PS3 is equipped with future proof cutting-edge technologies including Cell Broadband Engine™ and RSX® processors as well as Blu-ray disc™ player and HDMI. In addition, the PS3 system continues to evolve and enhance the user experience through new features and services delivered via software updates. In September 2009, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) launched a new slimmer and lighter PS3 system with a new form factor and less power consumption that has been well received by users around the world.
To further expand the entertainment experiences available only through the PS3, stereoscopic 3D gaming and Blu-ray 3D™ features were introduced to the system via a free system software update in April and September 2010. The feature enables users to enjoy stunningly realistic stereoscopic 3D on their PS3 system attached to a 3D-compatible television. As of 1 April, 2011 there were 89 stereoscopic 3D software titles available for the PlayStation 3.
The PlayStation® Network service was launched concurrently with the PS3 in 2006. It now has more than 75 million registered accounts and operates in 59 countries and regions around the world. PlayStation Network supports free community-centric online game play and communication tools such as PlayStation®Home and offers vast downloadable digital content including games, movies and TV shows, through PlayStation®Store. Downloadable digital content on PlayStation Store currently totals 105,988 worldwide.
With strong support from 3rd party developers and publishers worldwide, PS3 features a vast library of more than 2,128 software titles, with more that 480 million units sold worldwide. Among these titles are 49 role-playing games as well as Seasons 1, 2 and 3 for True Blood.
