Doctor Who Premiere Tops Cable’s Stickiest List

In Television on 11 September, 2014 at 10:06 am

Doctor Who The 12th Doctor (Peter Capaldi)

When it comes to engaging viewers the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) rises above the cable competition. It seems that more viewers who tuned into the the premiere episode of Doctor Who Season 8 stuck around to watch the entire episode than any other show airing on cable that week. The Doctor Who premiere also had a higher stickiness index, according to Rentrak, Inc. than the stickiest shows on broadcast TV during the same period.

The Season 8 premiere episode of Doctor Who may have been the most engaging show of the the, however, it didn’t garner the most attention on social media. That honor went to the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards show. Interestingly the MTV awards show, which aired the day after the Doctor Who premiere ranked fifth on the Stickiness Index for Cable shows indicating that fewer viewers who did tune in to the broadcast kept watching until the end credits rolled.

Rentrak is the leader in measuring movies and TV everywhere. Social media and viewer engagement results are for the week ending August 24, 2014.

The Last Vampire Inks Movie Deal

In Authors, Books, Film, True Blood, Vampires on 22 September, 2013 at 8:49 am

“In The Last Vampire series we are introduced to an entirely original world, in a universe vastly different from other vampire stories. This legend is born from the more classic genre of Bram Stroker’s “Dracula”, steeped in history, mythic lore and even religious beginnings. Our main character is not only one of the first vampires, she is also believed to be the last surviving – but all that is just page one of this ‘roller-coaster’, action-adventure fantasy ride,” comments Michael Preger.

If you think that sounds like a great premise for a film, you’re right. You, and thousands of fans of Christopher Pike’s series of young adult novels now known as Thirst No. 1: The Last Vampire, Black Blood, Red Dice are also in luck because Preger, the producer behind the highly anticipated movie version of Vampire Academy (scheduled to arrive in theaters on Valentine’s Day 2014), and his team at Preger Entertainment just signed a deal to bring Sita to the big screen.

Sita is not your usual vampire even by 21st Century standards. For starters she’s well a girl. And not just any girl (if girl is the appropriate term: female? woman?), Sita is the first and the last of the vampires. Her reality is far different from that of ordinary humans, though she tries to blend in, at least she tries up to a point. This ancient being is no less than a 5,000-year-old predator. Arguably Sita is the best predator, not to mention the most efficient and successful of her kind. Like most vampires, she is capable of great violence and horrific brutality however she is also capable of great spiritual beliefs and compassion that is almost human-like. She leads a chameleon-like existence in a world rife with danger from ancient, supernatural secrets as well as modern man.

The film deal, which is reported to be in the six figure range, was negotiated on behalf of Preger by Wayne Alexander of Alexander, Lawrence, Frumes, & Labowitz and Laurence Becsey from the Intellectual Property Group. Ryan Nord of Hirsch, Wallerstein, Hayum, Matlof & Fishman represented author, Christopher Pike. No word on who may be adapting the screenplay let alone directing or possible casting, however the cover of the retitled book reveals a female with blonde hair, golden or amber eyes and pouty lips that is not dissimilar to Anna Pacquin. What do you think, truebies: Could you see Sookie, not just as a vampire but as The Last Vampire?

Hitting the Streets of Death Valley

Where would you go if you were a Vampire, werewolf, or Zombie?

Death Valley, of course!

With the success of Teen Wolf, it is not surprising to find that MTV is premiering another preternatural show, Death Valley. In a mix of Cops meets Shaun of the Dead, Death Valley looks as if it may be an extremely funny Vampire/Zombie/Werewolf parody. Premiering August 29 at 10:30/9:30c, viewers are in for a bumpy ride as they go to the streets with the cops as they fight to end the supernatural invasion.

A year ago, vampires, werewolves and zombies mysteriously descended upon the streets of California’s San Fernando Valley. Death Valley is the dark comedy that follows the cops that capture the monsters, and the camera crew that captures the cops.

Follow the horrific yet comedic exploits of the newly formed Undead Task Force (UTF), a division of the LAPD created to combat the emergence of monsters in the San Fernando Valley. Death Valley showcases the outrageous and courageous men and women working the toughest beat in the US: Death Valley.

Balancing dark humor with horror, the show is built upon cold-blooded conflict and character driven comedy, following the cops bent on keeping the streets safe from the presence of the paranormal. Documenting each case of zombie, vampire and werewolf encounter is the daring camera crew that is embedded within the task force, quickly revealing that the monster problem goes much deeper than anyone could have possibly imagined.

Full of subtext about living in today’s insane world, Death Valley is at its core a fun, non-stop thrill ride featuring chases, hardcore kills, and extraordinary creatures. The zombies are disgusting, menacing and brutal, the vampires are dangerous, smart and powerful and the werewolves are beastly and insane. From “blood-for-sex” prostitution busts to undead traffic jams, every call from dispatch will take you to a place you’ve never been: right to the bleeding heart of Death Valley.

Going Too Far, When Fantasy Overrides Reality

In General, Television, True Blood, Vampires, vox populi on 20 August, 2011 at 6:10 pm

When you think of Vampires, where do you imagine they live?

Most would say places such as Transylvania, Paris and New Orleans, just to name a few. Never would anyone believe Galveston, TX to be home to such a predator.

This coastal community was shocked to learn that Lyle Monroe Bensley had been arrested for attempted Vampirism?

Actually, the 19 year old man was arrested for home burglary with the intent to commit a felony. Having broken into a local woman’s home, Bensley attempted to suck her blood. The police arrived to find him clothed only in a pair of boxers, hissing and growling in a parking lot. Heavily tattooed and pierced, Bensley claimed to be a 500 year old vampire who needed to feed.

Bensley is currently being held on a $40,000 bond in the Galveston County Jail. He is awaiting a psychological evaluation.

As with all cases that are similar in this nation, a debate over the behavior and its connection to popular culture has arisen. How much blame can honestly be put on the entertainment industry that produces Vampire-based shows that have violence and sex? How about the dozens of books that are published monthly, that feature Vampires within their pages?

In April, a  Wisconsin man took a plead deal for felony child abuse, after biting the neck of a three year old boy he was babysitting. He claimed to have been watching the popular HBO series True Blood with the child. Afterwards, he and the boy “were goofing around, wrestling and nuzzling”. The boy’s mother discovered the discolored marks and reported the incident to the police.

While, Bensley doesn’t claim to have been “inspired” by any form of entertainment, the debate continues to rage on.

Where does the line between fantasy and reality exist and who is ultimately to blame?

Area 5 celebrates @KingNorthmanA5

In RP, Shape Shifters, The Fae, True Blood, Twitter, Vampires, Wizards/Witches/Pagans on 14 August, 2011 at 5:55 pm

Last night was @KingNorthmanA5’s death day and the glitterati and political-elite of the supernatural world were out in force to celebrate the Turning of the vampire King of Norway. The invitation-only fete, organized by @Scarlett_Area5 and @PamR_Area5, was the resounding social success of the summer.

Eric Northman is a fixture in Louisiana society, as owner of the popular club Fangtasia and vampire Sheriff of Area 5.  His influence goes far beyond that, both in terms of geography and species, as the guest list shows. Joining his loyal followers from Area 5 were representatives of the fae (ok, one, @Fae_Celeste was a gift to Eric from Scarlett), Weres, humans, demons and even witches. Fellow Sheriffs, @RomanLucious (accompanied by his lady @Tammyjo__) of Mississippi’s Area 2 and Godric, @SheriffArea_9 of Texas attended. Vampire royalty was well represented by Louisiana’s own king @WTCompton while Andre Paul, @KingBigDaddesty, King of Arkansas and Maude, Queen of Minnesota also made the guest list.

As impressive as the creme-de-la-creme of vampire society is, this party had a very personal feel and it is obvious Northman is well-loved by his progeny. His newest Childe, @TrinityBodare attended with her husband @CaptainRaynes1. They were also accompanied by @TamaraLanglee. Elder Childe Pam Ravenscroft had her hands full helping to organize the event but still managed to find for a lengthy tete-a-tete with King Bill. Scarlett, whom Northman referred to as his bonded during the evening, certainly went to great lengths to see that his party was an amazing event. One can’t help wondering, however, why she was seen leaving in the company of @LF_Snow, whom, it had been rumored was flirting earlier in the week with Pam….

The gifts alone put Northman among the most envied of vampires ranging from a fae to original artwork to a red Aston Martin convertible to a free vacation in Biloxi. One might wonder who is trying to buy his favor or, perhaps, buy their way out of trouble.

By all accounts the party was a hit from the Russian Blood Cake to the music of the night. Should we start looking forward to next year…?
