Development begins on werewolf masterpiece “The Skin Trade”

The Skin Trade is both a new spin on the werewolf legend and a classic, macabre mystery, shrouded in dark secrets, on the chase for a shifty killer with a thirst for the most unlikely of victims,” said Mike The Pike Productions (MIKP) CEO/Producer, Mark B. Newbauer.

Mike The Pike Productions recently announced that the company has re-upped its option for The Kin Trade by George R.R. Martin, the author/creator behind HBO’s Game of Thrones. Unlike the Game of Thrones, Skin Trade is based not on a series of books but a single novella. The option give Mike The Pike Productions the exclusive film rights to develop the material for screen and intended for wide theatrical release.

The Skin Trade is set in a macabre world reminiscent of Underworld or The Howling. The twisted and violent murder mystery, however, is much more in keeping with Silence of the Lambs, featuring a female investigator who gets caught up in a series of grisly murders. In The Skin Trade however the monsters are real.

“George has once again created, in a matter of pages, a rich universe with complex characters and a jaw-dropping storyline that sticks with you well beyond the read,” Newbauer continued. “George is a great writer because George is a feeling human being with, from what I can tell, as much compassion and understanding of human nature as he has imagination and attention to detail. Where most great writers are creating great stories, George creates, time and time again, entire worlds, in which every character, every moment is real, even in the most bizarre scenarios or settings. It’s why this piece, above any other I’ve read or seen is, hands down, the best werewolf story there is.”

A graphic novel based on The Skin Trade is being developed by Avatar Press. Martin is one of the guests appearing with Avatar at Comic Con in San Diego this weekend. He also moderated today’s Game of Thrones panel at Comic Con today. Game of Thrones is set to begin production on season two of the series on 23 July.

The team from Mike The Pike Productions is also attending Comic Con. Producer Ryan Colucci is promoting his werewolf graphic novel (with writer Dikran Ornekian and illustrator Pawel Sambor) Harbor Moon, as well as the MIKP SPOKEFISH slate of upcoming graphic novels. Colucci also wrote the sci-fi thriller White Space, another Mike The Pike Productions project that recently wrapped principle photography. White Space is directed by Ken Locsmani, founder of filmworksfx.com.
