“I am thrilled that Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has been embraced by a global audience in such a profound way,” said Director Rob Marshall. “I feel incredibly fortunate to have been able to make a movie that reaches across the world.”

And globally embraced it has been. On 2 July, 2011, when Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides crossed the $1 billion mark in global box office earnings, it became only the eighth film in history to cross this threshold. It is the second billion-dollar earner for Disney’s popular franchise. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006) was the first film from Walt Disney Studios to earn more than $1 billion at the box office. Since than Disney has chalked up 4 more billion-dollar earners including Alice in Wonderland (also starring Johnny Depp) and Toy Story 3. In total 5 of the 10 biggest films of all time are currently from the Walt Disney Studios.

“There can be no greater thrill or satisfaction than knowing you’ve been fortunate enough to produce a series of films which have delighted millions all over the world,” said producer Jerry Bruckheimer. “The success of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is a testament to the great talents of Johnny Depp and our wonderful cast, director Rob Marshall, screen writers Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio and the entire company.”

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides launched with the biggest international opening ever.  Sailing past the $500 million international threshold in a record-setting 14 days, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides now ranks third among all-time international box-office earners. It is also Disney’s biggest overseas release ever, having grossed $774 million internationally as of 4 July, 2011.

The fourth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is also the biggest in 59 territories around the globe. In Japan Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides spent 6 weeks at the top of the box-office charts, earning more than $100 million USD. It became the highest grossing Disney film released in China in just 9 days and in Russia in only 11 days. Opening weekend earnings for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides surpassed the entire gross of the previous Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End in both China and Russia.

The four Pirates of the Caribbean films have earned a combined $3.68 billion in global box office, claiming the Number 2, 3 and 4 spots on the list of all time top international box office earners. (We should mention that Johnny Depp, you know that gorgeous and talented man who began charming preternatural audiences with Edward Scissorhands and hasn’t stopped since, has four films on the all-time top international earners list as well, the three Pirates of the Caribbean movies and Alice In Wonderland. How is it that Depp has not, yet, won an Academy Award??)

Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Rob Marshall, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Strangers Tides captures the fun, excitement, humor and adventure that ignited the franchise and inspired one of the most popular and enduring rides at all the Disney theme parks. (For those who are curious or trivia buffs, the first Pirates of the Caribbean ride opened at California’s Disneyland Park in 1967.) The 2011 film again stars the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) on a journey to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. Along the way, he crosses swords with the mysterious Angelica (Penélope Cruz) and sails with the legendary pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane) aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge. As he races to find the Fountain of Youth, Captain Jack confronts a range for preternatural creatures from zombies to mermaids.  Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides  is based on the novel On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has shown us just how strongly this story and these characters resonate with people the world over,” explains Rich Ross, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. “To reach $1 billion with any film is such a rare an exciting milestone, and I want to thank and congratulate Jerry Bruckheimer, Johnny Depp, Rob Marshall and the rest of our Pirates family on this incredible feat.”
