“We’re very proud of our Bookworm Wednesdays program, now in it’s 13th year, and are excited to once again encourage and rewards kids for digging into a great book,” said Scott Bernstein, Vice President of Global Marketing at National Amusements, a world leader in the motion picture exhibition industry in the U.S., U.K. and Latin America. “The whole family can enjoy the benefit of keeping their children’s minds active, and enjoy a fun day out at the movies.”

Bookworm Wednesdays, National Amusement’s annual summer reading program, starts 6 July and runs through 10 August at 26 participating locations in MA, RI, NY, CT, NJ and Ohio. The 6-weeks program advocates literacy by offering free admission  to a select family film every Wednesday at 10 a.m. when children present a book report are a participating theater box office. Children who wish to participate but aren’t reading on their own yet may draw a picture of a story an adult has recently read them. Adults and children under the age of 6 accompanying participants also receive free admission to the 10 a.m. matinée.

The films being screened especially for readers include:

  • Over the Hedge – This is what happens when wild (talking) animals discover suburbia and why we should leave them in the forests. (6 July)
  • Bee Movie Barry B. Benson wants to change the world. Along the way he upsets the balance of nature and the way humans view bees.  (13 July)
  • Kung Fu Panda Sometimes, daydreams do become real, just ask noodle-sales panda Po…  (20 July)
  • Shrek Forever After The fitting finale to the fairy tale… will Shrek get his happily ever after? (27 July)
  • How to Train You Dragon Sometimes historic enemies can turn out to be the best of friends. (3 August)
  • Megamind Can a villain exist once he’s vanquished his arch-nemesis hero? Find out in Megamind! (10 August)

On the final day of the program (10 August, 2011) each participating theater will hold a grand prize drawing. All book reports submitted that day will be entered into a drawing for a Bookworm Wednesdays prize pack including one month’s worth of movie tickets and a variety of books.
