Preternatural films make modest gains on best-sellers and most rented video lists

In Film, Shape Shifters, Television, True Blood, Twilight saga on 24 June, 2011 at 12:11 pm

After hitting a low point the previous week demand for videos with preternatural themes rebounded somewhat last week. A total of five films with preternatural themes or characters were among the top-selling DVDs for the week ending 18 June, 2011, while four were among the most rented for the week ending 19 June, 2011.

Four preternatural videos appeared on both the best-selling and most-rented lists. They are:

  • Battle: Los AngelesThe battle to reclaim Los Angeles from aliens not only lured Sgt. Michael Nantz (Aaron Eckhart) out of retirement it also was the most rented video of the week and second only to the remake of True Grit among the best-sellers. Johnathan Liebesman directed this film for Columbia Pictures which also stars 2nd Lt. William Martinez (Ramon Rodriguez of the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) and LCpl. Peter Kerns (Jim Parrack also known as Hoyt Fortenberry in HBO’s True Blood).
  • Young love triangles  and werewolves took the Number 3 spot among top-selling DVDs and the Number 5 slot among the most rented videos last week, and we’re not talking the Twilight Saga or Harry Potter even though Cesaire (Billy Burke) looks a lot like Charlie Swan and werewolf hunter Father Solomon (Gary Oldman) resembles Sirius Black. Warner Bros. Red Riding Hood sets the familiar fairy tale in a medieval village under the direction of Catherine Hardwicke (who also directed the first Twilight movie).
  • Gnomeo and Juliet, the animated gnomish retelling of Shakespeare’s tragic love story landed at Number 7 among the best-sellers and Number 9 among the top-renting DVDs. Director Kelly Asbury, who was also behind Shrek 2 and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, guided a chorus of familiar preternatural voices. Everyone from Hogwarts’ Professor McGonagall (Maggie Smith) to Bruce Wayne’s trusty butler Alfred (Michael Caine) to Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) has lent their voices to the garden version of Shakespeare’s classic play produced by Touchstone Pictures.
  • The fourth film to make both lists was, ironically, I Am Number Four. The sci-fi thriller from Dreamworks and director D.J. Caruso landed at Number 5 among all the best-selling DVDs and was the third most rented DVD of the weekStars John (Alex Pettyfer) and Sarah (Dianna Agron) may not be on the same level as Edward and Bella or Hermione and Ron, but they seem to be developing a solid fan base among young audiences.

True Colors True Blood Season 4

We saved the best for last because Number 5 on the best-selling DVD list was True Blood: The Complete Third Season! The summer is definitely heating up with the True Blood Season 4 premiere of HBO’s original hit series starring Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgärd) and Pam Ravenscroft (Kristin Bauer van Straten) this week! Looks like lots of fans are catching up with the storylines and characters .
