Talking to the dead? There’s an app for that…

“Abnormal electromagnetic fields are associated with most reported paranormal phenomenon,” explains Ben Williams, developer of the Paranormal Recorder app. “It occurred to me that if EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenons, i.e. unexplained ghostly recordings) are caused by paranormal forces there are likely electromagnetic fluctuations occurring during these communications.”

A look at the Paranormal Recorder app

Excelltech’s Paranormal Recorder for iOS (iPhone and iPod Touch 4.0 or later) uses the raw magnetic data from the device’s digital compass to trigger audio recording, revolutionizing the hunt for ghostly communications. Sound high-tech? It is. Sort of.

This isn’t the voice recording equivalent of your butt dialing your phone. Paranormal Recorder only records audio when the electromagnetic fields around the device fall outside of normal limits. Think of it as the audio version of a motion activated light. Not only can an entire night’s worth of recording be reduced to the dozen or so minutes that are most likely to contain EVP, but by detecting the high electromagnetic fluctuations associated with these phenomena, this app can actually help ghosthunters detect spirit presences.

Paranormal Recorder was originally released in March 2009. Since that time, paranormal investigators claim to have discovered dozens of clear EVP samples using the app.  Unlike previous versions, the latest version, Paranormal Recorder 3.11, allows these samples to be shared and scrutinized by investigators and skeptics at the audio sharing site SoundCloud (Paranormal Recordings group).

Paranormal Recorder 3.11 is priced at $2.99 USD and available exclusively through the App Store (Utilities category).

Excelltech Mobile is also behind other popular iOS apps like Virtual Graffiti, UFO Spot, Woe is Oz 1 and Dreamer’s Log as well as apps for Android and BlackBerry devices.
