VIZ Media debuts Dorohedoro

In Books, Ghosts on 14 March, 2010 at 8:34 pm

Dorohedoro blends bloody mutant action with the classic horror elements — zombies, demons and ghosts — and an intricate post-apocalyptic urban setting,” explains Leyla Aker, Editorial Manager of VIZ Media. “At the same time, the characters are likable, the dialogue’s funny, and I think readers will be surprised by its charm.”

Charm isn’t something one expects to find in a city so dismal it’s known only as “the Hole”. And yet, the gritty urban sci-horror series Dorohedoro is the latest creation of manga visionary Q Hayashida who is widely known for her bold art style and for seamlessly integrating preternatural universes into her stories.  Dorohedoro has already been serialized in IKKI, Shogakukan’s magna magazine, and been featured on SigIKKI.com, the publication’s innovative online joint venture with VIZ Media.

For those who aren’t familiar with Dorohedoro, the story takes place in a preternatural world where an underground group of Sorcerers have been abducting people off the streets to use as guinea pigs in atrocious black-arts experiments. Nikaido finds Caiman, a mutant with the head of a reptile and a bad case of amnesia, in one of the Hole’s many dark alleys. Together, Nikaido and Caiman set out to kill as many Sorcerers as they can, hoping that the Sorcerer responsible for the spell on Caiman will be among those they destroy thus breaking the curse. It isn’t long before En, the Sorcerer in charge, learns a lizard-man is slaughtering Sorcerers and send a “cleaner” crew after the pair.  This ignites a war between the Sorcerers and the other inhabitants of the Hole.
