Death is Out for Vengeance

Sometimes movie series get a great start. Regardless if it is merely the concept that is interesting enough to captivate audiences or the overall quality of the movie, movie goers love a flick filled with blood, gore and the preternatural. But when is enough, enough?

Over a decade ago, New Line Cinema released Final Destination. This premiere introduction in the inner workings of death intrigued audiences as Alex Browning (Devon Sawa) and several of his classmates escape from their flight after a vision led him to believe it was doomed. Moments after takeoff, the flight exploded in midair, the only survivors were those who had been ushered off the flight, just moments before it left the gate.

But death has a plan and when it’s your time to go, it’s time to go. Over the past twelve years, audiences have gathered to watch as death has taken vengeance on those who have escaped its grasp. Escaping death’s clutches once doesn’t mean you are out of the game, in fact, it just makes things more interesting.

Each subsequent movie proved to be even more disappointing than the one before it. Culminating with The Final Destination, where viewers believed the end of an era had finally been reached. With its poor graphics and attempt at making the movie more realistic by shooting it in 3-D, fans were surprised that New Line Cinema had agreed to a fifth and final movie in this series.

Final Destination 5 has proven to revamp the dying series. With its reintroduction of William Bludworth (Tony Todd), the creepy mortician that originally informed Alex Browning of his fate in the original Final Destination, the newest plot seems strangely interesting. The ending leaves fans of the series saying “Oh my God!” and of course, the montage of all the famous death scenes throughout the years, is worth remaining in your seat for a few more minutes while the credits roll.

Ending the series on a relatively high note, one can only hope that the folks at New Line Cinema do not get it in their heads to make any more sequels. But as always, in Hollywood, overindulgence is popular.

Will we have another date with death? Or is this truly the final destination on this ride?

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 fell from the Number 2 ranking to Number 4 this weekend at the box office, earning an estimated $21.9 million for Warner Bros. On 31 July, 2011 , only 17 days after it’s North American, as well as most international markets,  theatrical release, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2  surpassed the $1 billion mark for worldwide box office earnings. Part 2 is the first film in the popular series to achieve billion dollar earnings and only the ninth film in cinema history to do so. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is the top-grossing film in Warner Bros. history. It shares the record for the fastest climb to the $1 billion mark.

“To say that the global response to the film has been extraordinary would be an understatement,” said Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, President of International Distribution for Warner Bros. “We are so proud that this last film in the series has not only reached such heights but has reached them in record time. It is now Warner Bros.’ most successful release ever, and there is still plenty to come.”

With an extensive cast Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows II is the first and only Harry Potter film to be offered in 3D and it is the most successful box office earner in the Harry Potter franchise. With an extensive cast, Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fines), Albus Dumbledore ( Michael Gambon), Severus Snape (Alan Rickman), Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), Hermione Granger (Emma Watson), Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint), Luna Lovegood (Evanna Lynch, who somehow manages to stay clean throughout the final film), Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter) and Draco Malfoy (Best Villain Tom Felton), to name a few, this final instalment truly marks the end of an era.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

Harry Potter: The End

The final chapter begins as Harry, Ron, and Hermione continue their quest of finding and destroying the Dark Lord’s three remaining Horcruxes, the magical items responsible for his immortality. But as the mystical Deathly Hallows are uncovered, and Voldemort finds out about their mission, the biggest battle begins and life as they know it will never be the same again.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon fell to the Number 8 spot at the box office this weekend. Earning another approximately $5.9 million dollars for Paramount, the third installment of the Transformers franchise brings back the Autobots and their bid to save Earth from the Decepticons. Reprising their roles are Sam Witwicky  (Shia LaBeof), Lennox (Josh Duhamel), Epps (Tyrese Gibson) and Simmons (John Turturro who is currently in pre-production as Hades in Gods Behaving Badly), to name a few. Dylan (Patrick Dempsey or Robert Phillip from Enchanted),  joins the cast as does newcomer and former member of the British Embassy, Carly Spencer (Rosie Huntington-Whitely in her film debut) and Bruce Brazos (preternatural icon John Malkovich who sat down with Artisan News Service to discuss the experience).

Directed by Michael Bay and written by Ehren Kruger, this is the first Transformers film to be offered in 3D. In this instalment, we are taken back to 1961 when President John F. Kennedy makes his promise to the nation to put a man on the moon. Little did the nation know, the reason behind such a promise was because of a report of a crash on the moon. The 1969 NASA moon landing was actually an investigation of the wrecked spacecraft. We are then fast-forward to 2011 where we see Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeof) through his desperate attempt to navigate adulthood and we learn that he is no longer with Mikaela, but is now living with his new girlfriend, Carly (Huntington-Whitely). The Autobots, however, learn of a Cybertronian spacecraft on the moon and are forced into a race against the Decepticons to find it and learn its secrets.

It has been a good weekend for movies with preternatural themes. What did you see this weekend?

“Captain America and Harley-Davidson are both great symbols of freedom, but we can never forget the brave men and women who have made extraordinary sacrifices to protect our way of life,” said Dino Bernacchi, Director of Marketing Communications for Harley-Davidson. “We’re excited about the potential of this unique auction to strengthen our relationship with the Disabled American Veterans and the work they do.”

The “unique auction”, announce Tuesday, 26 July, 2011, is the auction of a 2011 Harley-Davidson VRod® Muscle VRSCF autographed by the stars of the new hit film Captain America: The First Avenger (in theaters now) to benefit Disabled American Veterans (DAV).

The online auction begins 28 July, 2011 and continues through 4 August, 2011 at http://www.ebay.com/herobike. All proceeds of the auction will benefit DAV Charitable Service Trust to fund the Harley’s Heroes™ program.  The bike was autographed during the film’s world premiere in Los Angeles by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Harley-Davidson collaborated with Marvel Studios to provide several motorcycles for Captain America: The First Avenger. The film traces Steve Rogers origins as a superhero during the World War II era when he rode a military motorcycle as a means of transportation.  For you trivia buffs: Harley-Davidson produced and dispatched approximately 90,000 motorcycles overseas as part of the war effort during WWII.

Along with the charity auction, Captain America fans visiting participating Harley-Davidson dealers will receive (while supplies last) an exclusive poster featuring captain America on his 1942 Harley-Davidson “Liberator”. Never-before-seen footage produced in collaboration with Marvel Studios is featured on Harley-Davidson’s Captain America promotional web site as well.

A major supporter of the DAV since 2006, Harley-Davidson has provided two million-dollar grants to the organization through the Harley-Davidson Foundation. The grants helped fund the creation of Harley’s Heroes™ a program bringing benefits, education and counseling to veterans in communities across the U.S. through the DAV Mobile Service Offices. Since 2007, Harley’s Heroes has visited thousands of sites across the nation helping thousands of veterans and their families secure the benefits they are entitled to from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the U.S. Department of Defense and other government agencies.
