Area 5 celebrates @KingNorthmanA5

In RP, Shape Shifters, The Fae, True Blood, Twitter, Vampires, Wizards/Witches/Pagans on 14 August, 2011 at 5:55 pm

Last night was @KingNorthmanA5′s death day and the glitterati and political-elite of the supernatural world were out in force to celebrate the Turning of the vampire King of Norway. The invitation-only fete, organized by @Scarlett_Area5 and @PamR_Area5, was the resounding social success of the summer.

Eric Northman is a fixture in Louisiana society, as owner of the popular club Fangtasia and vampire Sheriff of Area 5.  His influence goes far beyond that, both in terms of geography and species, as the guest list shows. Joining his loyal followers from Area 5 were representatives of the fae (ok, one, @Fae_Celeste was a gift to Eric from Scarlett), Weres, humans, demons and even witches. Fellow Sheriffs, @RomanLucious (accompanied by his lady @Tammyjo__) of Mississippi’s Area 2 and Godric, @SheriffArea_9 of Texas attended. Vampire royalty was well represented by Louisiana’s own king @WTCompton while Andre Paul, @KingBigDaddesty, King of Arkansas and Maude, Queen of Minnesota also made the guest list.

As impressive as the creme-de-la-creme of vampire society is, this party had a very personal feel and it is obvious Northman is well-loved by his progeny. His newest Childe, @TrinityBodare attended with her husband @CaptainRaynes1. They were also accompanied by @TamaraLanglee. Elder Childe Pam Ravenscroft had her hands full helping to organize the event but still managed to find for a lengthy tete-a-tete with King Bill. Scarlett, whom Northman referred to as his bonded during the evening, certainly went to great lengths to see that his party was an amazing event. One can’t help wondering, however, why she was seen leaving in the company of @LF_Snow, whom, it had been rumored was flirting earlier in the week with Pam….

The gifts alone put Northman among the most envied of vampires ranging from a fae to original artwork to a red Aston Martin convertible to a free vacation in Biloxi. One might wonder who is trying to buy his favor or, perhaps, buy their way out of trouble.

By all accounts the party was a hit from the Russian Blood Cake to the music of the night. Should we start looking forward to next year…?

This week’s top preternatural hardcover books

In Aliens, Books, Dragons, Entertainment, Ghosts, Shape Shifters, The Fae, Vampires, Wizards/Witches/Pagans on 12 August, 2011 at 3:19 pm

Looking for something good to read? Being a bestseller doesn’t automatically make a book a great read, but chances are, preternatural fans will find something to enjoy in these 10 books six fiction, four nonfiction). From Dragons, Vampires and even psychopaths, there is a little of something for everyone on this week’s list.

Hardcover Fiction

Dresden Files

Debuting at Number 1 this week is Ghost Story by Jim Butcher. The thirteenth installment into the Dresden Files find Harry Dresden in a pickle. Published by ROC Hardcover, a smaller section of Penguin Group. (Ranked 1st overall on the New York Times and Publishers Weekly hardcover fiction best seller list.)

A Dance with Dragons is the fifth addition to the popular series, “A Song of Fire and Ice” by George R. R. Martin, the hunt for power and the ultimate prize of the iron throne is still on. In the wake of a devastating battle, it is still unclear as to what is in store for the fate of the Seven Kingdoms. Daenerys Targaryen rules over a city of dust and waste as her enemies begin to surround her. Will the last of the House of Targaryen survive with the help of her three dragons, or is doom looming just over the horizon? Only time will tell as the Dance of Power begins to take its toll. (Ranked 2nd overall on the New York Times and Publishers Weekly hardcover fiction best seller list.)

Also debuting on the bestsellers list, is the twelfth installment into the Otherworlds series, Spell Bound by Kelley Armstrong. Having given up her powers in exchange for the safety of a young girl, Savannah Levine finds herself hunted. Isolated and without her magic, it is up to her to discover a way to overcome the challenges ahead. Dead Reckoningthe 11th book in the popular Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire Mystery series by Charlaine Harris, takes the Number 2 spot among preternatural hardcovers this week. This time, Sookie, Eric, Pam and the whole Bon Temps/Shreveport crew discover that sometimes you don’t always get what you want and even when you do things don’t always work out the way you planned. Published by Ace Books, a division of Penguin, Dead Reckoning, takes readers deeper into a southern fried world where vampires (and shape shifters) have come out of the coffin that is both similar to and vastly different from that of the HBO original series True Blood which take their inspiration from the books. Read our review of Dead Reckoning. (Ranked 23rd overall on the New York Times and Publishers Weekly hardcover fiction best seller list.)

Also debuting this week is Star Wars – Choices of One by author Timothy Zahn. Set after the Battle of Yavin, an attempt to offer sanctuary to the Rebels, sets into motion a game of betrayals within betrayals. Things are never easy, even in a galaxy far, far away. Published by Lucasbooks. (Ranked 26th overall on the New York Times hardcover fiction best seller list.)

The Last Werewolf, by Glen Duncan, rounds up the list in the Number 6 spot. Life’s hard when you are a 201 year old werewolf, or so, Jake Marlowe believes. The last of his kind, Jake is left with nothing more to do that have meaningless sex and working out all the time. Trapped in a lonely existence, he must make a choice: to continue on or to end a thousand year old legend by ending his own life. Published by Random House. (Ranked 32nd overall on the New York Times hardcover fiction best seller list.)

“Yes, there are vampires here . . . But don’t give this book to Twilight groupies; the frank tone, dark wit, and elegant, sophisticated language will likely do them in. . . .  smart, original, and completely absorbing. Highly recommended.”
—Barbara Hoffert, Library Journal (Starred review)

Read an excerpt of The Last Werewolf.

Hardcover Nonfiction

We were sad, but not entirely surprised to find there was a lack of preternatural-related books in this week’s Hardcover Nonfiction.

Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain by David Eagleman explores the mysteries of the brain beyond (beneath, behind?) the conscious mind. Eagleman, a renowned neuroscientist, reveals the truths, or at least parts of the truth, to many surprising mysteries in what turns out to be a very engaging and oddly easy read. Incognito is published by Pantheon Books, a division of Knopf Doubleday. (Ranked 10th overall on the NYT and 16th on the Publishers Weekly bestseller list for hardcover nonfiction.)

Falling from the top position on the list is Area 51: An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military Base by Annie Jacobsen. This is a compelling and at times revealing account of the most famous military installation that doesn’t exist. Once considered science fiction, Area 51 is full of myths and conspiracy theories that captivated imaginations for much of the last half of the 2oth century. Based on interviews from those who have lived and worked there, this is the first non fiction book chronicling the history of Area 51 in a fascinating eye-witness narrative demonstrating that fact can be as gripping as fiction and sometimes even more incredible. Published by Little, Brown and Company, a division of Hachette Books Group. (Ranked 21st on the New York Times overall non-fiction bestsellers.)

The Psychopath Test, by Jon Ronson, adds a bit of insight to this week’s list. With a mistrust for psychiatry, he sets out to prove that psychopath checklist and DSM-IV can be used to as a means to classify nearly anything and everything an individual does as being suspect for psychopathic behavior. If you thought you were crazy for role-playing on Twitter, this book may help ease your fears. (Ranked 27th overall on the New York Times hardcover nonfiction best seller list.)

Ever wonder why Maenads believe so strongly in Dionysus that they will themselves into becoming immortal? Or if there is life after death? Michael Shermer’s The Believing Brain: From Ghosts and Gods to Politics and Conspiracies—How We Construct Beliefs and Reinforce Them as Truths, expresses his theory on the birth and actualization of beliefs. From superstitions, believing in aliens to economic and political beliefs, this book doesn’t discriminate in its analysis of beliefs, regardless of how realistic or bizarre they may be. Published by Times Books. (Ranked 31st on the NewYork Times best seller list)

We form our beliefs for a variety of subjective, personal, emotional, and psychological reasons in the context of environments created by family, friends, colleagues, culture, and society at large; after forming our beliefs we then defend, justify, and rationalize them with a host of intellectual reasons, cogent arguments, and rational explanations. Beliefs come first, explanations for beliefs follow.

That’s it in hardcover fiction and nonfiction for this week. Which ones have you invested in? We’d love to hear your thoughts so leave us a comment below (since we aren’t Sookie and can’t read your mind)!

Macy’s Great American Elf Adventure begins celebrating 85 years of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

In Shopping, Television, The Fae, Travel on 10 August, 2011 at 11:25 am

“Macy’s Great American Elf Adventure is a fantastic way to kick-off our 85th Anniversary celebrations,” said Amy Kule, executive producer of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. “Since 1947, the iconic Macy’s elf balloons have been fan favorites and for generations have served as an emblem of the Macy’s Parade. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a key element of America’s favorite parade is one that aspiring artists should not miss. We can’t wait to see all the inspired creations and look forward to the winning design joining the rest of the Macy’s elf family in the Parade this year.”

So what is Macy’s Great American Elf Adventure? Well, is seems that Macy’s existing Parade Elves have been dispatched across the U.S. as well as in Guam and Puerto Rico, to celebrate the upcoming 85th Anniversary of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade®. In their excitement, the elves left Santa’s Workshop in the middle of summer and weren’t quite ready for their Parade debut. As a result, well, they’re a little colorless. Which is great news for anyone who has ever dreamed of becoming a balloonatic as Macy’s Parade balloon designers are called.

Beginning 9 August, 2011, artists and amateur balloonatics need to search out any of the more than 10,000 rambunctious elves in need of a paint job at Macy’s stores nationwide. Once an elf has been spotted, artists can let their imagination run wild as they transform the elves from understudy to a multicolored creation of wonder and star of the show. Would-be balloonatics have until 24 August, 2011 to enter their creation at Facebook.com/Macys for the chance to win a trip for four to New York City and see it soar to new heights in the legendary holiday extravaganza.

Macy's Elves

Macy's Elves (image courtesy of Macy's)

To find Macy’s magical elves in Macy’s Great American Elf Adventure, look for clues on Macy’s Facebook page and via Twitter @Macyservents or #Macyself. Each day between 9 and 24 August, Macy’s will post a clue and a password that will help reveal the location of the elves. The daily clue and password can also be retrieved by texting  ELF to MACYS (62297). Once would-be-balloonatics have deduced where the elves have taken shelter that day they must tell a department sales associate the daily password to receive their coveted fae model.

In addition to sheltering colorless elves in Macy’s stores across the U.S., 10 cities will host Macy’s Elf-Apolooza as a few high-spirited gnomes take a road-trip across the country. Starting from New York City and Jackson, MS, the elves and some helpers will be bringing fun-filled family events to Los Angeles, Omaha, Detroit, Little Rock, Greenville, Des Moines, El Paso and Anchorage.

The magic really begins once the artists get their new elf friend home. Fans are asked to let their imagination take flight and design what could be the newest member of the Parade elf contingent. Once their masterpiece is complete, the amateur balloonatic should submit detailed front and back photos of their creation to Macy’s via Facebook. To enter, participants will need to “like” Macy’s on Facebook and the download the “Elf” application. Entries must include the identification serial number found on the packaging containing the elf (all real Macy’s elves will have one) and upload their photo and complete application by Wednesday, 24 August at 11:59:59 PM ET.

A judging panel from Macy’s Parade & Entertainment Group will narrow the entries down to the Top 85. These 85 entries will be posted to Macy’s Facebook page on Tuesday, 30 August for fans and friends to begin voting for their favorite elf. The elf garnering the most votes as of Tuesday, 6 September, 2011 will be announced in mid-September. The winning design will then be transformed into a helium wonder by the magicians of Macy’s Parade Studio. In addition the winning artist and newest balloonatic, accompanied by three friends or family members will receive a trip to New York City to see the Parade live and enjoy their elf’s maiden flight.

Complete entry rules and regulations for Macy’s Great American Elf Adventure are available in-store or by visiting Facebook.com/Macys.

The 85th Anniversary Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade airs on Thursday, 24 November, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in all time zones on NBC-TV. Check your local listing for station information.

Economy woes hit the Tooth Fairy

In Characters and Creators, Fairy Tales, Health, The Fae, Urban Legends/FolkTales, vox populi on 5 August, 2011 at 12:22 pm
Tooth Fairy

One vision of the Tooth Fairy

You know the economy is hurting when the Tooth Fairy cuts back. Oh, this beloved cuspid collector is still visiting children every night, she just isn’t paying as much for the teeth she’s collecting as she used to, according to a new survey from Visa Inc.

The Tooth Fairy visits 90 percent of American children under the age of 12. Most children have lost all their primary, or “baby” teeth by then, although some may not lose that last second molar until they are 13. The process begins around age 6 with the bottom front teeth and progresses for the next 6 or so years in the order in which the teeth came in the first place, according to the Alan Carr, D.M.D. of the Mayo Clinic.

This year the Tooth Fairy is leaving an average of $2.60 per tooth, according to Visa. That’s a 40 cent decrease from last year. Since humans have 20 baby teeth, that means the icon of magical munificence is spending roughly $52 per child over a six-year period at the current rate.

The steepest cuts are being seen in the Eastern U.S. where the Tooth Fairy is now leaving just $2.10 per tooth. That’s a 38 percent drop from the #3.40 being left in 2010. Children in Southern states are feeling a 21 percent cut to $2.60 in 2011 from $3.30 in 2010. Midwestern children will barely notice the decline of a dime or 3 percent to $2.80 in 2011.

In a rare ray of economic sunshine, children in Western states bucked the national trend and received a 4 percent increase. They pocketed $2.80, just like the kids in the Midwest for western kids that was up from $2.70 in 2010.

Not all teeth are created equal and it is just where a child lives that makes a difference. Only 18 percent of children receive between $2 and $4 in exchange for shed teeth. And while another 18 percent rake in $5, 29 percent receive exactly $1. Seven percent get less than $1.

Sadly, the cuspid collector also appears to be cutting travel expenses because 10 of American children receive no money from the Tooth Fairy. That’s up from 6 percent in 2010.

The loss of primary teeth, which are also referred to as milk teeth, is an important rite of passage in many cultures around the globe. The Tooth Fairy, however, appears to be of 20th century American origin. To be sure, there are some similarities with Norse, Irish and Italian folk tales that are centuries even millenia old. But when it comes to the Tooth Fairy, her or himself, the icon is as American as Captain American although slightly older, the Tooth Fairy having first appeared around 1900. More recently, the Real Tooth Fairies have raised their profile and given children, especially girls, a glimpse into their world online. Interestingly, they don’t live in castles made of shed teeth as some legends might have you believe.

Minutes 7 & 8 of the True Blood Season 4 Premiere

In Characters and Creators, Entertainment, Television, The Fae, True Blood on 13 June, 2011 at 2:32 pm

Nothing like flying balls of… Fairy Dust(?) to scare you as you run for your life.

Jump into an abyss of darkness or stay around and get harvested? I’m confused as to why this is a hard decision, but as we all know… Sookie is sometimes a bit slow on the uptake. Lucky for her, her grandfather isn’t and pushes her in as the portal closes. Of course, this is after being told he can not leave since he has had the lumiere fruit… so we will await anxiously for the outcome of Sookie’s grandfather.

Of course this scenario isn’t all too surprising, considering HBO’s “Show Your True Colors” campaign. It seems the fairies are the first to do so and I’m sure they won’t be the last.

13 days until the blood begins to spill!

Talking Pam (& Phoenix & Faerie)

In Books, The Fae, True Blood, Web Sites/Online on 7 June, 2011 at 1:58 pm

The lovely and talented ladies over at EricNorthman.net generously invited @TB_PamR to join their Dead Air blogtalk radio show on Monday, 7 June, 2011. With the Season 4 premiere of True Blood just around the corner and the Phoenix Comic Con barely in the rearview mirror we had plenty to discuss!

Pam at the mike

Kristin Bauer van Straten at the microphone

The first 6 minutes of Season 4 was the first topic of business and met with mixed reactions. The consensus seems to be that Alan Ball’s vision of Faerie is radically different from the one found in the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris. Even the name of Sookie’s grandfather was changed, possibly signally the most significant departure the series has taken from its novel roots even as it steals lines from it. Casting seemed to raise some questions as well, both for Earl (Gary Cole) and Hallow (Fiona Shaw). Read the rest of this entry »
